The Timeline of Languages presents language as a historical continuum rather than a series of isolated moments. It connects early marks and symbols with the development of script, inscriptions and organised literary production.
Large-scale displays, replicas and selected objects illustrate how political authority, religion, trade and social mobility influenced the spread of language. Multilingual inscriptions reveal that several languages frequently shared the same public space.
The gallery also examines how scripts changed over time and how regional literary centres contributed to the formation of India’s rich written traditions.
